Ascot — SL5

Bigger properties ask bigger electrical questions.

The SL5 area — Ascot, South Ascot, North Ascot, Sunninghill and Sunningdale — has a housing stock unlike anywhere else we work. Large detached period houses, substantial post-war and modern builds, and a steady stream of high-value new development, with individual properties commonly running to several thousand square feet.

Scale changes the work. A four or five thousand square foot house is not a three-bed semi with more rooms in it. Circuit counts go up, cable runs get long enough that voltage drop starts to matter, and the single-phase supply that is fine for most homes is not always fine here once you add a pool, a gym, a workshop, air conditioning and two car chargers.

It also usually means outbuildings. Annexes, garages, garden rooms, stables and studios all need supplies designing rather than extending.

Large property rewires and three-phase

Rewires and distribution work in larger houses, including three-phase supplies and sub-distribution where the load or the layout justifies it. Designed and calculated, not estimated.

EV charging on long driveways

Chargepoint installations where the parking is a long way from the board — correct cable sizing for the distance, armoured runs, and load management so the supply is not overwhelmed.

Outbuildings, annexes and garden lighting

Supplies to garages, garden rooms, annexes and studios, plus exterior and landscape lighting designed to be usable rather than merely bright.

On the ground

Long runs, big loads and why the calculation matters.

The problem that comes up most in properties of this size is distance. Voltage drop is cumulative along a cable run, and there is a limit set out in BS 7671 on how much of it is acceptable before equipment starts to misbehave. On a short run in a small house this is never an issue. On a hundred metre armoured run down to a garden studio or a chargepoint at the end of a drive, it is the thing that decides the cable size — and getting it wrong is expensive to discover afterwards.

The second is total load. Adding a chargepoint to a house that already has electric heating, a pool pump and an induction kitchen is not automatically possible on the existing supply. Sometimes the answer is load management, sometimes it is a supply upgrade, and occasionally it is three-phase. The point is that it is a calculation with an answer, not a guess.

Both are worth establishing before anything is ordered or any trenches are dug.

Common questions

Questions we get asked.

Do you cover Sunninghill and Sunningdale as well as Ascot?

Yes — Ascot, South Ascot, North Ascot, Sunninghill and Sunningdale are all within our normal area.

Can you work with three-phase supplies?

Yes. Where a property has three-phase, or where the load makes it the sensible answer, we design and install to it. Where it is not needed we will say so rather than sell you one.

The parking is a long way from the house. Can I still have a charger?

Almost always. The distance drives the cable size and the installation method rather than ruling it out. We calculate the run properly, allow for voltage drop, and price the armoured cable and ducting honestly up front.

Will you work alongside our builder or architect?

Yes. On larger projects it is much better if the electrical design is settled early, while walls are still drawings. We are happy to work to a specification or help produce one.
